New River Gorge Aboard the Amtrak Cardinal
October 17, 2019 We have an early departure this morning headed to Virginia and West Virginia. At lunch time we will arrive in Duffield, Virginia where we visit the Natural Tunnel State Park…known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” The tunnel is 838 feet long, 100 feet high and wide enough to accommodate Stock Creek and the C&X Railroad! You will enjoy a chairlift ride down to the tunnel and a picnic lunch will be provided. After our visit here we travel to Hiltons, Virginia where we visit A.P. Carter’s Old Store and learn about the famous Carter family. We will travel to the famous Crooked Road. The highway passes through some rugged coal mining country that was home to Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, and Ronnie Millsap. Tonight we overnight in Huntington, West Virginia.
October 18, 2019 We will have breakfast at our hotel (included) and we then head out to board the Amtrak Cardinal Train from Huntington to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Today you will see some of the most beautiful scenery in America as we travel along the banks of the New River and under the famous New River Gorge Bridge. This is the highest bridge east of the Mississippi and is an engineering miracle. This afternoon we arrive in Beckley, West Virginia where we will visit the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. This is a 35 minute underground tour of a vintage coal mine, providing visitors an opportunity to see how a turn of the century coal mine works. We arrive home early evening.
